Hillsboro – My definition would be something like this…..A small, quaint town that has a very special place in my heart. Everyone knows everyone. Virginia’s Mayberry. It’s special because….My Mom and Dad were married there –
My grandparents are buried there –
My Mom was raised there on this beautiful farm –
As a child when we visited on Sunday for dinner, I always knew we were close when we slowed down to go through the town.
Fast forward – We drive through frequently given it is the very close to the ‘entrance’ of the Virginia wine country – Loudoun County.

And we now have friends that have a beautiful home there.
So when they invited us to attend Eat, Drink & be Literary! at the Old Stone School I was excited.

The evening consisted of a man named Lee Stetson sharing the life of John Muir as he knew it. As he studied it. As he ‘lived’ it.

Short Hill Mountain Boys opened up while we grabbed a glass of North Gate wine and walked through the school.

That was the first time I had actually been inside the old school. As I entered the original classrooms and wondered who in my family had attended the school. Had sat in a desk in this very room. Had read or written on the old blackboard.

The funds raised are going to be used to continue to enhance the ‘Stone School’.

It was very interesting to listen to this guy talk through John Muir’s life. He has performed more than fifty major theatrical roles from Shakespeare to Simon. His early work in television included numerous appearances on Hawaii 5-0. He is very talented and pulls you into his performance to the point where you feel like you are living back in time.

The major of Hillsboro presented him with a ‘Hillsboro’ license plate. That means he is a ‘local’ now =)

He chatted after the performance and was more than happy to get a picture or two –

Small towns like this have so much to offer. The residents all work together, making the community very welcoming. Click the picture below to find out more about activities and events they have to offer. We will definitely attend all that we can.
During the holidays there are so many things to do within the area. Here are a few of our favorites….
- The 46th Annual Old Tyme Christmas in Harpers Ferry
- A Christmas Carol @ the Old Opera House in Charles Town
- Walking in a Winter Wonderland @ Clearbrook Park
Traditions are the best! What are some of yours?
