Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m not crazy about any holiday. Yes, I have special days but when it comes to most ‘regular’ holidays I would prefer to do nothing. Sit inside with my candles and hide. But my awesome husband will have none of that (well he puts a limit on it, let’s just say that) so on Mother’s Day he took me to Harpers Ferry. Ahhh a beautiful sunny day, sitting on the deck watching the rivers (Potomac and Shenandoah) flow. Listening and watching the trains come in and out of the station. And watching the people enjoy this historic little town that’s just 20 minutes from our home. Yep, I think we are pretty lucky.
It was very busy but we were able to find a ‘parker’ =) (a special way to say “there’s a parking space!”) The first sight was the remnants of the fire last July. Ugh. So sad. This small little town forever impacted. It will truly never be the same.

We moved on – up the steps to the Potomac Grille – This is and old place with a new name. When we participated on the Ghost tour it was called the Secret Six…..there are stories of ketchup bottles moving on tables and many other ‘odd’ happenings. LOVE that. But it now has a new name but the same look. And the same great food.

And the view you ask? Perfect – I love hearing the trains come through. I think we saw four while we ate. I always wonder what the people are doing on the MARC trains. Reading. Blogging. Working. Sleeping. I’m sure all that plus some.

After an enjoyable lunch and chat we decided to walk around a little. There are such unique shops.

Of course I wanted to stop by the Vintage Lady, she is always very supportive of the Baseball Boosters and has such special items all ‘locally’ made.

Her shop was one impacted by the fire but this sign says it all…..

As I was walking through this caught my eye –

It felt like Dad was right there saying it – Oh how I miss him, just like the Harpers Ferry after the fire – things will never be the same. And then I saw this –

And knew I just had to own something from those top two shelves. I searched and touched and decided on a necklace. It had originally been a pair of earrings but only this was found in the rubble…

How special – I just LOVE things that have a story. Which is why I also had to have one of these –

Williamsport – just about 30 minutes away. I’ll consider that local =)

What a special day it ended up being. Funny how lunch and a walk in a small, quaint, historic town can make you feel like a queen. And then top it off with some ice cream with chocolate sprinkles?! oh myyyyy now that is the life.

I’m sure somewhere close you have to be able to find a quaint little town – the weather is getting much more enjoyable so get out. Walk through the old streets. Enjoy the history. Absorb the natural beauty. All the while, supporting ‘the locals’.
